Norbert Frištacký beside work

Norbert Frištacký was born on November 8, 1931 in Púchov, Slovakia. He spent most of his life in Bratislava.

Sport

Ever since he was the student, he participated in sport events. First, he played basketball at university, then he even became a manager of the university's volleyball team Slavia STU. Also was a good swimmer, being able to swim across 2 km. He was also very keen in hiking.

Leisure time

His colleagues remembers him as a person very passionate in his work – whether during the vacation in former Yougoslavia, where he spent his time by translating texts, or during various leisure-time actions organized by university. Apparently the only place where he was able to relax was his self-made weekend house near capital of Slovakia, Bratislava. Those who knew him well always smiled upon the fact that his Renault 12 emblem was always stolen.

He had never been in Communist political party. In spite of that he hold several significant positions in Slovak University of Technology (STU) even before the Velvet Revolution in November 1989.



Years from now there will be stories, how professor was tutoring and giving consultations even on Sunday mornings because of his working busyness. His working ethics couldn’t be overlooked by second Slovak president, Rudolf Schuster, who mentioned him in his memoirs. His only bad habit was the fact that he was smoking cigarettes. It stayed with him more or less throughout his life and many remember him with both hands inside his pockets - looking for the cigarettes and lighter.

Private life

His wife and whole family was supporting him in both the private and working life. The brace of almost 50 years of cheerful marriage was undoubtedly inspiring and encouraging at his work. He can by very proud of his only son and at the verge of his life he lived to see his tree granchilds as well.


After difficult illness he died on July 5, 2006 in Bratislava, where he is also buried. In 2007 he would celebrate his 75 birthday.
